Adding a personal touch to rented properties

by The Dulux Team

When moving into a new home, the first item to cross off the 'to do' list is often 'paint'. Whether you want to blitz the magnolia and add a splash of colour or cover up the former occupants' lime green feature walls, putting a personal touch on your new home with a fresh coat of paint is a must for most of us.

However, for those of us who live in rented properties, this isn't always an option. So how can you make your home feel your own when renting?

Here are a couple of tips

  • When moving into a rented property, it's likely that you'll have some of your own furniture. Perhaps a wooden table, cupboard or chest of drawers. Why not give these items a colourful makeover with Dulux easycare satinwood? It's the perfect way to add a personal touch to a room and really make it feel like home.
  • Speak to your landlord. Some landlords are open to tenants painting a wall or two, provided that they return them to the original colour before moving out. However, make sure you get any agreement in writing before you pick up a brush.
  • Accessorize! When it comes to making an outfit your own, everybody knows it is the accessories which make all the difference. From the vintage belt, to the chunky necklace, it's the small touches which give a look your own personal twist. When it comes to interior design, the same is true. If you aren't able to give the walls a colourful makeover, showcase your personality through cushions, throws, lamps and curtains. Pick patterns and colours which reflect who you are and you'll soon forget that your property is rented.
