Everyone has a favourite interiors colour - what is yours and why?

My favourite colours are ever-changing but currently I'm in love with majestic peacock shades - ranging from opulent blue based tones to more green tints, this colour has great flexibility both in fashion and interiors. I'm even wearing this colour as a bridesmaid for my sister's wedding.

Which interiors colours do you see as prominent in our homes for 2011?

Zingy yellows and greens will continue to grow in popularity with a need for fresh, enlivening shades in the home to create uplifting surroundings. Teaming these shades with bright corals or fuchsia accents will really bring your space to life.

Tangerines are having a real revival at the moment which is great to see. Oranges rarely get the credit they deserve - the perfect colour to inspire creativity and fun in your home.

Where do you get your interiors inspiration?

I attend key international trade shows like Maison d'Objet as well any design events in the UK like 100% Design and Tent London. I also think fashion is a core influence so like to keep up to speed on what's happening in this arena as well as visiting interesting art exhibitions. Sometimes you can even gather great ideas from the natural environment, particularly when it comes to colour combinations - after all, Mother Nature knows best!

Is there a particular interior style you like contemporary, classical and how would you describe this style?

I would say it's important to me to mix interior design up when it comes to styling. An eclectic collection of old, authentic pieces and new design teamed with bold and contemporary colour makes for the most engaging of spaces - if everything's too 'matchy', it doesn't feel like a real home to me.

Have you seen colour used in a cool or original way recently – It could be your favourite place, a hotel, restaurant, favourite art gallery?

I am desperate to visit this lifestyle hotel in Copenhagen which offers a different colour story and unique design in every room. Created by a mixture of graphic designers, urban artists and illustrators, it's inspiration at its best!

What would be your top tips for people looking to create an interiors look for their homes?

Here are a couple of helpful hints on finding your perfect scheme:

  • Consider the space you have to work with - if you've just moved in, take time to get used to your new home. Experience its lighting conditions at different times of day to influence the tone you'd like to wrap around you, warm versus cool, pale, mid or deep to create the right mood.
  • If you have existing items of furniture or furnishings that you either can't or don't want to get rid of then use these as your starting point. Dulux Colour Click finds the closest Dulux colour to your item and suggests a variety of schemes which will work beautifully so you can make a confident choice.
  • Most importantly, go with colours you love, colours you are most likely already wearing - chances are if you are often surrounded by these shades in fashion you won't be disappointed with your walls!
