Sustainability
At Dulux we believe in using our innovation and science to add color to people’s lives. We want to maximize the positive impact of paint today and in the future through a more sustainable paint and interior design solutions that lower our environmental footprint. That’s why we are committed to venture into new frontiers to redefine the very essence of paint by reducing fossil solvents or moving to water-based products, using renewable resources in the production process or as ingredients to reduce the carbon footprint of our products. Here, you can learn more about our available sustainable solutions.

Sustainability Proposal
Water-based Formula
Traditional solvent based products (often still used in trims, woodcare and metalcare products) contain a lot of VOC (Volatile Organic Content) VOCs contribute to greenhouse gases (that contribute to global warming) and also negatively impact indoor air quality.
Water-based products have additional benefits, such as being quicker drying and lower odor.

99.9% VOCs free
VOCs contribute to greenhouse gases and also negatively impact indoor air quality.
Measured in accordance with ISO 11890-2:2020 (ISO – Standards).
99.9% VOC free paints contain less VOC than traditional paints with a lower impact on the (indoor) air quality.

Produced using lower CO2 materials
Paint produced using renewable or recycled materials in the production process delivering a carbon footprint reduction, against same paint formula produced with 100% fossil-based or virgin materials. The end-result is a more sustainable paint with the same product performance and quality but a lower carbon footprint.
Various methods can be used:
· Mass Balance
· Recycled Materials
· Carbon Capture & Utilization (Short CCU)
- Mass Balance
In the production process of our raw materials some of our suppliers partially replace fossil based ingredients with their renewable equivalent. The biomass balance approach allows our suppliers to use a mixture of those materials in their production processes and assign the renewable content to paint products (mass balance grade) up to a maximum dictated by the amount of renewable materials inputted in the production process. An independent body ensures, via an audit, that the quantity of renewable material used and claimed in the entire manufacturing process is respected. This ensures that the supplier only sells to us renewable materials (mass balance grade) up to the maximum allowed by how much renewable content was put it.
Typical renewable material used are by-products of wood, waste products, bio-methane…
Similarly, a recognised independent body (TÜV SÜD) intervenes at our production site to audit the traceability of this mass balance resin in our paints. This certifies that our certified products comply with REDCert2 requirements and are considered partially made from renewable raw material. This certification and audit process guarantee that we cannot claim more biobased materials being used in our products than actually put in the raw material manufacturers process. RedCert2 certification is widely used for this type of process in the chemical industry.
This principle is actually similar to the principle of "green electricity". Subscribers cannot be sure that the electricity coming to their homes comes from renewable sources, as different sources are mixed in the final distribution grid. However, they buy a guarantee that the amount of energy they consume will be fed into the grid in a "renewable version“
- Recycled materials
Recycled ingredients are given a second life in our suppliers or in our own production process leading to a lower carbon footprint. Typically resins can be (partially) made of recycled ingredients; TiO2 and extenders can be recycled.
- Carbon Capture & Utilization (short CCU)
CO2 (carbon dioxide) emitted by our suppliers, that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere, is captured and converted into another basic raw material used to replace its fossil variant into the production process. This recycling process delivers a lower carbon footprint material of the same quality to be used in our paint formula.

Better understand our solutions:
1. What is carbon footprint?
The carbon footprint of a product indicates how much climate impact the processes and ingredients for making a certain product have on the environment. In particular global warming. Carbon footprint is expressed in CO2-equivalent (carbon dioxide equivalent) emissions which makes it possible to compare the climate impact of products. A product's carbon footprint includes the emissions for the entire life cycle (so called cradle to grave). This runs from raw material extraction/manufacturing to product manufacturing to product final consumption and ultimately disposal.
By lowering the carbon footprint of our products we contribute to reducing our environmental impact.
2. What does fossil, renewable, biobased and recycled mean?
Fossil raw materials are materials that are derived from depletable sources, sources that will run out and are not regenerated in the lifetime of a product. Key examples of fossil raw materials are coal and oil.
Renewable materials are materials that can be replenished in a relatively short period of time. Biobased materials are renewable materials that are derived from biomass such as plants, animals or other (once) living organism. Since biomass can be grown continuously, biobased materials will not be depleted.
Recycled materials are based on waste materials that can be converted into reusable material rather than going to landfill or incineration.
By replacing fossil-based materials by renewable or recycled materials we are safeguarding exhaustible natural resources.
Renewable, biobased and recycled materials generally have a lower carbon footprint compared to fossil-based and virgin materials as their generation process, extraction and/or their disposal have a lower impact (carbon footprint) on the planet.
3. What is paint made of?
A typical paint is made of several ingredients that can be either organic or inorganic material. Explained in a simple way, organic materials are carbon atoms based, inorganic materials are not.
Renewable, biobased and recycled organic materials generally have a lower carbon footprint compared to fossil-based and virgin materials as their generation process, extraction and/or their disposal have a lower impact (carbon footprint) on the planet.
A standard interior wall paint contains 10-25% of organic material (the resin being the biggest contributor):
- Inorganic ingredients (i.e. water, TiO2, minerals, etc.): 75-80%
- Organic ingredients (i.e. resin, additives, etc.): 10-25%
4. What are the Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)?
VOCs are organic solvents that easily evaporate at room temperature and contribute to greenhouse gases (which in turn contribute to global warming) and are also negatively impacting the indoor air quality.
