How to create a colour palette that flows seamlessly through your home

Colour is one of the simplest ways to give your home a cohesive sense of style. The key is not to think of each room individually but to consider how each space relates to the others in your home. Here’s how you can create a colour palette that flows seamlessly throughout your home.

Start by deciding what your inspiration is

A good starting point is to find a colourful item that inspires you. It could be a colourful print, a patterned cushion or rug, or a piece of ornamental pottery. Decide which colour it is within the piece that speaks to you, and let this colour become the foundation of your indoor colour scheme.

Connect spaces with the same colour

Once you’ve picked your inspiration colour, use it to tie the different spaces in your home together. Consider how the colours can flow from one room to the next. There are a few ways you can do this:

Create a colourful shift from room to room

If your home has an open-plan feel, try painting the walls in complementary or contrasting colours that subtly shift from room to room. For example, you could start your home colour scheme with a soft, pastel pink, like Femme in the hallway, then change it up with a deep blue, like Rich Teal, in the living room, before completing your contrast colour palette with a delicate green, such as Freshwater Pearl.

For a more coordinated room colour palette, you could choose a warm neutral, such as Cherished Ribbon, as your foundation colour, then pair it with two autumnal oranges, like Copper Glow and Winter Pumpkin. An accent of delicate pink, such as Dulux Colour of the Year 2024 Sweet EmbraceTM, would complete the look beautifully.

Add accent walls to neutral colour schemes

Painting your home in a single, neutral colour is the easiest way to give it a unified sense of style. To avoid the space feeling samey, you can create visual interest by adding accents like feature walls in coordinating shades. A timeless grey-white, like White Horse, is a great neutral foundation colour for a cool neutral, such as Apple Box, or a delicate blue, like Duckegg Delight

Add colour to architectural details for visual appeal

No rule says you can only add colour to your walls when choosing a colour palette for your home. You can create points of interest within your room’s colour scheme by painting architectural details, such as kitchen islands, bar stools, or a fireplace surround, to add visual interest. You could paint the walls of your kitchen in Dulux Colour of the Year 2024 Sweet EmbraceTM then paint the island in Delicate Pink to make the room colour palette sing. Painting a recessed wall in Village Maze against the perfect white can create a focal point.
